2 Step Marketing – Do It Right

I Get a Lot of Postcards…

The other day, I received a postcard trying to sell me a copy machine. It was covered in tiny lettering on both sides—so hard to read that I threw it away.

A few days later, I got another postcard. This one had just 32 words telling me I could learn about long-distance phone service for only 5.5 cents a minute, with no monthly fee. All I had to do was call the 800 number.

I called.
I got the info, had my questions answered, and ended up switching my long-distance provider.

That company used a proven, time-tested technique known as the 2-step marketing process:

Step 1: Generate a Lead

Get me to call the 800 number by sparking interest.

Step 2: Provide the Requested Information

A sales representative spoke to me, answered all my questions, and made me feel confident about making the switch.

Why Does 2-Step Marketing Work?

It’s much easier to create curiosity and interest (a lead) than it is to close a sale on the spot. You’re not asking for money up front—you’re simply asking the customer to engage.

Use postcards or other simple formats to:

  • Prompt leads from your target audience.
  • Begin a conversation that leads to a sale.
  • Create a list of warm prospects for future follow-up.

And here’s the key: Follow-up matters.
Make it a policy to reconnect with anyone who expresses interest. Many sales come from repeated contact, not just the first inquiry.

The Right Way to Use Postcards

Your postcard should generate interest, not make the entire sale.

Include these three elements:

  1. A clear, compelling benefit (e.g., “Save big on your long-distance bill”).
  2. A strong reason to act now (e.g., a deadline or limited-time offer).
  3. An easy response option (e.g., a toll-free number or short link).

Example of a Simple, Effective Postcard Message:

Call 800-555-1212 to get your FREE report:

Offer ends 7/10/25

This kind of message works because it piques curiosity and offers real value. People respond because they want to know what they might be missing.

Final Thought: This Process Works

Test it for yourself. Use postcards with short, strong messages to generate interest, and follow up with those who respond.

You’ll be surprised how many qualified leads and real sales come from a simple, consistent two-step process.
